History / Background: Ramnabagan Mini Zoo within the Ramnabagan WLS spread over an area of 14.31 ha is located in mouza Baburbag J.L.No.40. P.S.Burdwan within the municipal limits of Burdwan town, State-West Bengal. This is under the control of Divisional Forest Officer, Burdwan Division. The area was declared as Reserved Forest vide Notification No. 2275-For. Dated 07.06.1960. In the year 1978, the area had been converted to a Deer Park with the introduction of 6 nos. of spotted deer. Subsequently, the whole area has been declared as Wildlife Sanctuary vide G.O.No.4345/For.-11B-71/80 dt.30.09.1981. The Sanctuary area has got recognition as Ramnabagan Mini Zoo vide Notification No. F.No.22-67/2004-CZA(473)(M) dt.22.04.2008 of the Central Zoo Authority and renewed upto 30.04.2010 vide CZA No. F.No 22-67/2004(473)(M) dt.22.04.2008.

Forest

Ramna garden, situated at a distance of about 1 km. to the North- West 'of the Burdwan town, with its tall and stately Teak and Sal forest having mesophytic associates are Kadbels, Dumur, Jam etc, is a solace from the din and bustle of urban life It is an old plantation of Tropical Deciduous Plantation created by Maharajadhiraj of Burdwan. Clans of bamboos are also remarkably thrived. This is a soothing solace amidst the din and bustle life just at the outskirt of Burdwan town.

Wildlife

Chital and Barking deer were introduced here since its inception in 1978. Present population of chital (spotted deer) is 51 nos. and black buck is 3 in no. Besides these the present wild animals in captivity in the zoo are as follows:

Leopard 1 nos;
Sloth Bear 1no;
Crocodile 2 nos;
Peafowl 7 nos;
Adjutant Stork 1no;
Rosy Pelican 1 no.

Common langurs are abundant in the zoo area. Parakits, Cuckoos, Storks, Snakes, Mongooses, Owls, Spotted Dove and differently commonly seen birds like martins have remarkable habitated in this Sanctuary cum Mini Zoo area.
